Abstract
The knowledge on the hip motion during walking is essential in understanding the function of the central joint which connects the trunk and the limb. To see effect of coxalgia on the human gait, we performed gait analysis of 10 normal men and 19
male
patients with unilateral avascular necrosis of the femoral head using VICON 370 motion analysis system
@ES The results of the patients are as follows:
@EN 1. Walking velocity, stride length and step length were significantly less than normal, and stance phase and double support phase were significantly greater than normal.
2. The pelvis showed increased range of motion on the sagittal plane, increased downward pelvic obliquity to the contralateral side during the weight bearing period of painful limb on the coronal plane, and increased range of motion on the
transverse
plane. The hip showed decreased range of motion on the sagittal plane, incereased abduction on the coronal plane, and increased in creased internal rotation on the transverse plane.
3. The magnitude of flexion moment, external rotation moment and total power in the hip was significantly less than normal.
4. Dynamic EMG showed that the activity of gluteus maximus of the painful side was higher than that of the contralateral side, and that the activity of gluteus medius of the painful side was lower than that of the contralateral side.
In conclusion, the gait patterns of coxalgic patients were unique, and seemed to result from
the protective mechanism to avoid pain on walking.
